Tour Description

Visit the Venetian port town of Chania, for 4 Nights –the Venetian Port town of Rethymno, for 3 nights & Elounda Bay for 3 Nights.

For travelers who are willing to venture on their own with the use of a rental Car and enjoy the best of what Crete has to offer.

Visit the Venetian Port town of Chania, to enjoy the attractions unique atmosphere of the Old town and the west part of Crete. Go to The Venetian Port town of Rethymnon, where you will stay in to the Venetian citadel and explore the southern coast of the island. Visit the Minoan Palace of Knossos and stay in Elounda Bay where you will enjoy the beauty of the bay and explore the east part of Crete.

During the specific trip travelers will be able to enjoy, History and Archeology tours, beautiful beaches, relaxation, unique architecture, Mediterranean cuisine and Cooking Classes, walking and Hiking tours, Gorges and quaint mountain villages, Churches and Monasteries.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrive at the Chania Airport where you will pick up your rental car and drive to your hotel, preferably at the old Ventian Port. Enjoy your first day at leisure by walking around the main attractions of Chania, such as The Venetian Cathedral, Kasteli (Castle), with its Venetian fortification walls and the light house, the Byzantine walls, the Mosque of the Janissaries, the old Venetian Town Hall, as well as the new one, the town's Archeological museum, the Jewish Headquarters with the synagogue and (Platia) Mitropoleos Square.

Day 2:
Next day you can optionally explore the Lagoon of Balos and Falassarna Beach, at the North West side of the island.
On the way there, you can take a short stop at the Villages of Platanias (the most active beach area of Chania) and Maleme (where the world war II monument is located), by following the old coastal road, which goes parallel to the Highway and the beaches.
You will arrive at the Village of Kissamos or Kasteli and past the village you will park the car at the port of Trachilos, where you will take an hour's boat ride to visit the Lagoon of Balos and view the abandoned Castle of Gramvousa.
Upon your return, you will drive to Falassarna Beach (Pachia Ammos) in 15 minutes where you can spend the rest of your afternoon.
Drive back to Chania and enjoy a nice meal at the taverns around the old port of Chania.

Day 3:
Today you will drive to the Lagoon of Elafonissi that is located at the south west side of the island, 90' minutes drive away from Chania town.
On the way there you can enjoy some nice breaks, by stopping at the mountain villages of Milies and Inachori, or the Monastery of Chrissoskalitisa is definitely worth visiting.
The village of Topolia and its local Gorge would also be worth exploring, together with the cave of Saint Sofia.

Day 4:
Samaria Gorge, which is the longest one in Europe, is an adventure worth experiencing, but only for the well trained ones! It's best to book an organized excursion that will have you picked up from your hotel, early in the morning and take you at the beginning point of the Gorge, where your guide will take you through to the Village of Agia Roumeli, approximately eight hours later.
Imbros Gorge, close to Chora Sfakion, is a milder Gorge worth exploring (2-3 hours hike), that should also be booked through an organized tour, that will help you visit the villages of Imbros Komitades and Frangocastello.

Day 5:
After Breakfast, visit the Monastery of Agia Triada, (20 minutes drive in the area of Akrotiri, past the airport) and on the way to Rethymno town, you should also stop at the Monastery of Saint George, at the village of Vryses, where you can enjoy some nice lunch.
Later in the afternoon, check in to your hotel, in the old town of Rethymno and enjoy your evening at leisure, exploring some of the attractions of the old town, the Rimondi district with the local Fountain, the 'Neratzes' Mosque, Saint Francesco Church and the Loggia of Rethymno. Twenty minutes east of the old town, is the beach front of Rethymno which is full of restaurants coffee shops and bars.

Day 6:
Today you can explore the southern coast of Crete and visit the Lagoon of Preveli (60' drive) and the Kourtaliotis Gorge, Plakias Vilage, the Monastery of Preveli and the secluded Beach of Kokkina Chorafia. On the way to Plakias village, you can take a stop at the picturesque village of Roustika and Argiroupoli. On the way back from Preveli, you can equally enjoy a stop at the village of Spili. You could optionally extend your sightseeing in the area and visit the Beach of Matala (former hippie's settlement), that is located south west of Preveli and the ruins of the Minoan Palace of Festos, south of Vori Village.

Day 7:
Your last day in Rethymno, would be worth visiting the village of Adele and the Arkadi Monastery (15 drive west of the old town) and then visit the village of Anogia, the Archeological site of Ancient Zominthos and the local caves and caverns in the surrounding mountain areas.

Day 8:
After Breakfast drive to Heraklion town where you will visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, where they host exhibits from various parts of Crete, dated back in the 5th millennium, BC and then the Minoan Palace of Knossos and.
From there you can drive to the Village of Archanes, Kasteli Village that are located at the slopes of the mountain and then drive down to the coast to Chersonissos, Malia, Neapoli and then the Bay of Elounda where you will stay for three nights.

Day 9:
Enjoy your day at leisure, in the main village of Plaka, boat trip to Spinalonga fortress and visit the town of Agios Nicolaos.

Day 10:
Explore the north east cost of the island and visit some of the villages of Lassithi Plateau, the town of Sitia and optionally the beach of Vai (2 Hours away from Elounda Bay).
Alternatively, you could drive south to Ierapetra and Makrygialos Beach and take a boat trip to the Natural reserve of Crysi Island, across Ierapetra town.

Day 11:
Drive back to Heraklio, where you will depart Crete.
